[Update]: Riot Games are working on an MMO set in the League of Legends universe!

Instead of keeping all game development in-house and under tight control, Riot Games have announced that they plan to partner up with developers both big and small in order to expand the League of Legends universe. In order to achieve this, as well as ensure the new games are properly funded, Riot have now also opened up their own publishing platform - Riot Forge.

"We’re a player and developer-focused publisher," reads the official announcement. "Our mission is to bring awesome new League of Legends games to players by partnering with experienced and talented developers from around the world."

"The League Universe and its champions offer limitless possibilities; by supporting and empowering passionate partners to tell their own stories and expand the League world, we’ll deliver a variety of bespoke games that enable players of all types to experience League in new and exciting ways."

While the details are still few and far between, the important thing to mention is that Riot isn't limiting themselves or the developers to a certain genre, platform or even singleplayer/multiplayer. As such, expect to see everything from RPGs to mobile games.

Right now only two Riot Forge published games have been announced, Ruined King and CONV/RGENCE, and both of them seem to have some good ideas behind them. How all of this will pan out in the end, only time will tell, but I certainly won't complain about more studios getting funded and more games getting developed!
