[Update #2]: The release date for Minecraft: Dungeons has been pushed back from April 2020 to May 26th on all platforms.

[Update]: Minecraft: Dungeons' latest developer update showed off a variety of environments, as well as Mojang's plans for the levels themselves.

While Minecraft is without a doubt an amazing game, especially when you load it up with more mods than you can possibly know what to do with, it has always lacked a certain sense of adventure for me as there is very rarely any sort of reward for your efforts. Sure, you could find an abandoned mineshaft filled with spiderwebs and long-overgrown tracks, but it's almost never going to be anything more than that. There's never going to be a strange portal at the very end of it, or even a random boss you might need to solve a few puzzles to unlock, and that is a real shame.

If you share my sentiment, you might be interested to hear that Mojang has now officially announced Minecraft: Dungeons - a brand new action-adventure spin-off inspired by classic dungeon crawlers. As you might expect from that description alone, Minecraft: Dungeons will have you brave "wildly varied levels" either solo or with a group of friends, tackle all sorts of new enemies and traps, scour all corners of the earth for treasure and equipment, and naturally, beat a big bad boss at the very end.

While the announcement trailer doesn't exactly offer much when it comes to gameplay, it will at least give you an idea of the sort of atmosphere and theme Mojang is going with. Have a peek:

Minecraft: Dungeons is expected to arrive on PC in 2019, though no exact release date has been announced just yet. Similarly, the few tidbits of information I've shared with you so far are basically everything that's currently available, so I'm afraid we're all going to have to wait for a little while in order to find out just what Minecraft: Dungeons really has to offer.

Once Mojang reveals more I'll make sure to let you know, and you should also keep an eye on the official website for any further developer updates.
