World of Warcraft: Dragonflight screenshot of the freshly improved Feral Druid talent trees

[Update #2]: It looks like the rumors were true - World of Warcraft: Dragonflight will be launching on November 28th, 2022!

[Update]: The hopefully down-to-earth Dragonflight expansion will be launching in 2022.

After fumbling around with the very concept of an afterlife, World of Warcraft will be taking things in a more grounded and familiar direction with the next expansion Dragonflight. You can expect to see a brand new draconic class/race combination, the Dracthyr Evoker, a new generation of flying mounts inspired by Guild Wars 2, improved professions, a customizable UI, as well as the long-awaited return to proper talent trees!

That said, the new talent tree system will work a little bit differently than before. For starters, there will be two distinct trees to explore: the class tree that offers general abilities and utility spells, and the specialization tree which lets you finely tune your playstyle. At level 70 you will have 31 class points and 30 specialization points to play around with, so in theory there should be a much larger diversity of builds than ever before.

Whether that will actually be the case or if everyone will simply follow the same few guides, only time will tell. For now, however, I'm very happy to say that Blizzard has released some awesome looking work-in-progress versions of the Druid and Death Knight talent trees! You can check them out, as well as read Blizzard's thoughts behind the changes, over at the World of Warcraft website.

Needless to say, the new system seems like a drastic improvement over the current one. I especially love how we're going to be allowed to create a complete garbage fire of a build that isn't capable of doing anything well. I say this not because I think it's funny for someone to be ineffectual, but rather because this signals that Blizzard has finally given up on trying to control the players and force them down very specific gameplay routes. It took nearly a decade for us to get here, but better late than never!

Once Blizzard shows off more of the talent trees, or releases more information about Dragonflight in general, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, I'll leave you with the cinematic trailer, just in case you missed it. Enjoy!
