The Division is the fastest selling new IP

Given the years of hype surrounding The Division, and the overall quality of content shown in the beta tests, I'm not surprised to see it selling extremely well, but I highly doubt anyone expected it to crush records in such a convincing fashion.

According to a Ubisoft blog post that went out recently, The Division is not only the company's best-selling game, but also the fastest selling new franchise in the entire world, generating ~$330 million within its first five days. Here's what Ubisoft had to say about their new record, and a couple of launch-week statistics:

"The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first-week sales of a new franchise is a tremendous achievement. We are very proud of our teams, and humbled by and thankful for the millions of players who are giving us their feedback and support. The Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive gaming playgrounds that keep players engaged, and that they eagerly share with their friends and community.

On top of record-breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our online infrastructure and services are paying off. We are delivering an online experience that’s on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and connectivity demanded by The Division and its players."

To continue on with the trend of absurdly large numbers, The Division peaked at 1,2 million concurrent agents roaming the streets of Manhattan. Overall, the players have managed to invest over 1,000,000 hours this weekend, which just goes to show that if you make a quality game the people will come, even if its not the 17th sequel in a franchise.

If you're among the horde of The Division players, and are nearing the end game, you'll be happy to know that there are a couple of free and paid expansions planned that will, hopefully, extend The Division's lifespan for many more months as well as flesh out the story through new campaign missions.

You can read more about the updates here, but the first free patch will be arriving in April and bringing with it loot trading and Incursions, a mix between a horde mode a "proper" raid.
