The Sims 4 official screenshot from the Desert Luxe Kit pack

[Update]: Right on cue, the base version of The Sims 4 is now entirely free-to-play on both PC and consoles.

If you're in the mood for developing an irregular sleep schedule, you'll be happy to hear that EA is going to be making the base version of The Sims 4 free-to-play. Starting from October 18th, The Sims 4 will be fully free to download and play on both PC and consoles.

The one catch, as you might imagine, is that the numerous expansions will remain a paid purchase. So if you're looking to grab the entirety of The Sims 4, it's still going to set you back a fair bit of money, even if the base game is entirely free.

As a small little gift to veteran players, anyone who owns The Sims 4 before October 17th will be granted the Desert Luxe Kit (pictured above) for free. Much like the name would suggest, the Desert Luxe Kit features a variety of furniture inspired by desert landscapes and mostly consisting of materials like stone and wood.

Similarly, EA Play and EA Play Pro members will receive an upgraded bundle once October 18th rolls around. EA Play members will get access to the Get To Work expansion pack, while EA Play Pro members will also get the Toddler Stuff Pack.

The final thing worth mentioning is that EA will also be doing a bunch of announcements and reveals for The Sims 4 on October 18th. The exact details are still few and far between, but once the big event goes live I'll make sure to let you know.

Until then you can learn more about The Sims 4 and its free-to-play re-release over at the official website. Enjoy!
