System Shock 3 is now officially confirmed to be in development

There was a brief "announcement" that hinted at System Shock 3 being a thing but with literally no information being given out many started to speculate on what kind of a game this would be exactly, would it be a true successor to System Shock 2 or would it go in a different direction, kind of what Bioshock did.

And now, finally, we have even the barest glimpse of what the game is going to be about after Otherside Entertainment released a short teaser as well as a press release you can find below.

You might be wondering who Otherside Entertainment are given that they don't have any games under their belt as of yet. The team is made out of quite a few people that worked on the old Ultima, Thief and you guessed it, System Shock games so as I've said before, if there is a bunch of people that understand what makes System Shock good its probably these guys as they're the ones that made it in the first place.

Here's what they had to say in a press release that quickly followed the teaser:

"OtherSide Entertainment, the development studio behind the upcoming fantasy RPG Underworld Ascendant, is excited to officially announce development on System Shock 3, the sequel to the landmark System Shock series.

Last week, OtherSide posted a teaser website (www.othersidetease.com) with cryptic lettering hinting at a new game. Internet hackers quickly cracked the site, prematurely revealing the game’s title. As part of the fun, series’ AI antagonist SHODAN appeared to mock the hackers with new taunts each day.

On the updated teaser site today, fans can hear popular voice actress Terri Brosius (System Shock 1 & 2, Dishonored) reprise her role as the voice of SHODAN and see an early peek at the evolving ‘next generation’ look of the character by artist Robb Waters.

Key members of the original System Shock and System Shock 2 teams will be part of the sequel. This includes Paul Neurath, who oversaw the original series’ development; Nate Wells, a senior artist on System Shock 2; and Waters, the lead concept artist of both original games.

The path to bring the System Shock franchise forward was long and winding. Several years back, OtherSide secured the exclusive IP rights to all future versions of the franchise. Only recently, through partnership with Night Dive Studios, who owns the System Shock trademark, did OtherSide get the rights to use the System Shock name for the sequel.

System Shock 3 is currently in the early concept stages of development. Fans can register on the teaser site (www.othersidetease.com) to receive updates as they become available."

While we still don't have a lot of information on System Shock 3 there is one really interesting tidbit of information. If you sign up for their newsletter (which gives you a chance to win a limited edition Shodan print) one of the questions directly asks how interested are you in VR technology.

Now while this doesn't mean that System Shock 3 is going to be a VR supported game it does mean that they are definitely looking in to it and given how scary System Shock 2 could be at times I am both excited and terrified of the prospect of playing the third installment with a VR headset on.

But as of right now System Shock 3 is in very early stage of development and as such there is no actual information about the release date or gameplay features. If anything shows up I'll make sure to keep you updated.
