[Update]: Rocket League has gone free-to-play alongside a major new update.

If you were planning to grab Rocket League at some point in the near future, you might want to reconsider. I say this because Psyonix has just announced that Rocket League will be going fully free-to-play later this summer!

Naturally, everyone who already owns it will retain their items and will be able to continue playing on their preferred platform. As an additional bonus, anyone who plays Rocket League online before the upcoming free-to-play launch will be granted all of the Rocket League branded DLC, as well as a variety of assorted cosmetics to help distinguish them from complete newcomers.

The one bit of bad news is that the Steam version of Rocket League will be going away. If you own it on Steam you'll still be able to play it whenever you want, but brand new players will have to go through the Epic Games Store. While this might come as a shock to some, I'm genuinely surprised it took this long to happen given that Epic bought Psyonix all the way back in May of 2019.

That little tidbit aside, you can learn more about Rocket League's transition to free-to-play, as well as check out the full FAQ, over at the official website.
