Overwatch screenshot of D.Va fighting Omnics from the latest cinematic trailer

With most of the major Overwatch developers currently in South Korea attending a fan event, I'm sure it won't come as much of a surprise to hear that Blizzard has chosen this opportunity to showcase a brand new cinematic short. More specficially, a cinematic short starring the Starcraft pro and occasional gremlin D.Va!

So if you're interested in getting a tiny bit of lore about D.Va and South Korea's seemingly massive Omnic problem, you'll find the video right below. Have a look, the animation is quite impressive:

While Blizzard's animation team has once again outdone themselves, I have to admit I'm still somewhat disappointed with this short. Unlike the previous few cinematics (and especially the Bastion one), there is very little emotional development for D.Va. There was no moment where she needed to learn patience or how to work with others, she just did what she always does and it ended up working out. This sort of story really needed her to sacrifice herself and her glory in an effort to save somebody else, because as cliche as that may be, it would at least give her a bit more depth as a character.

D.Va aside, I'm also slightly disappointed the Overwatch story has once again failed to move even a tiny bit forward. There are so many interesting events and characters I would love to learn more about, but Blizzard just seems content to only expand upon the story once a year, and that is a real shame. I did hear the Overwatch team recently hired a brand new writer, however, so here's to hoping we'll be getting more comics or even small stories to keep us occupied between the major releases.
