Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has only just made its way to PC and consoles, and already Level-5's president Akihiro Hino is teasing a brand new game. According to an interview with 4Gamer (which was translated by Gematsu), Level-5 is currently working on an MMORPG-scale game that's set in modern day.

"I’m not sure if we can call it an MMORPG or not, but were plan to make a big title on the same scale as one," Hino said. "Also, since were going into our 20th year, we want to make something we like. If we able to get support from talented people able to do things we can’t, then I think we’ll be able to make it. By the way, the game we’re preparing won’t be fantasy but rather 'modern day'.”

What exactly this means, he didn't further elaborate, but I can only assume it's going to be some sort of open-world RPG. What interest me the most, however, is the modern day setting. Is this new game going to feature a world that's devoid of magic and giant monsters, or are the developers going to go for a bit of a re-imagined version of our current world in order to make it more similar to other RPGs out there? Personally, I'm hoping for the first option because it would force some rather unique constraints on the development team, constraints that could result in a highly compelling story!

The new game is being made to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary, though I'm afraid it won't actually be releasing in 2018. Instead, we'll be getting a full announcement at some point this year, while the game itself will most likely take a couple of years in order to reach completion.

“It was said somewhere that we’ll make a game for our 20th anniversary, so I think it’s OK. Although we say it’s a game for the 20th anniversary, it won’t come out this year. Rather, we wanted to make the announcement in the year of the anniversary. For example, Ni no Kuni was a 10th anniversary celebration title, but it wasn’t actually released until two years later.”

Once more details get revealed I'll make sure to cover them, but until then all we can really do is sit and wait. Oh, and also finish playing Ni no Kuni 2!
