Insomniac Games - creators of Spyro the Dragon, Rachet & Clank, the Resistance series and Sunset Overdrive have announced today their latest, much smaller in scope, game.

Song of the Deep is an aquatic take on the metroidvania genre featuring action-adventure gameplay with plenty of exploration and secrets to discover as you follow a young girl on a quest to save her father. Here's the trailer and list of features:

- Explore a fantastic non-linear interactive underwater world, from ruins to boneyards to gardens. Every corner of the ocean offers a new surprise.

- Upgrade your submarine with new abilities to access new areas of the sea, and combine your abilities in surprising ways like catching a torpedo with your claw arm.

- Outwit, outmaneuver, and battle creatures along the way, from lantern jellies to giant bosses.

- Experience an unforgettable journey: A powerful tale about a daughter defying impossible odds to search for her father.

Song of the Deep is a bit different from Insomniac's usual work, and a lot smaller in scope, but you can't deny that it looks rather fetching. As someone who loves metroidvania-styled gameplay, a focus on exploration and games with stylish graphics Song of the Deep seems to be exactly the type of game I would enjoy.

Though one thing bothers me, and while I realize its an incredibly minor issue its still something I get nitpicky about - why is there an underwater spider sitting in a water-proof web? Out of all the Lovecraftian cosmic monstrosities that could lurk in the dark unknown, or even real animals that look like cosmic monstrosities, they've chosen a common, run-of-the-mill spider? Just seems like a massive waste of scare potential to me.

Inane rambling aside Song of the Deep will be arriving to the PC, PS4 and Xbox One in the summer of 2016. And here's a fun fact, its being published by GameStop of all people.
