Despite releasing all the way back in 2019, the co-op focused shooter World War Z has just recently unleashed a sizable new update. The definite highlight is the new Horde Mode XL that will pit you (and potentially a couple of friends) against a frankly ridiculous amount of zombies - over 1000 at a time!

The good news doesn't end there, however, as World War Z has also taken this opportunity to spruce up the Horde Mode with a new mutator system. As the name might suggest, these mutators will shake up the usual gameplay formula by having you face off against different types of challenges each time, including beefed up versions of special zombies.

What all of this looks like in action, that you can get a little peek at through the Horde Mode XL launch trailer. Have a gander:

The final thing worth mentioning is the new weapon progression system, that also comes with two new weapons to toy around with: Sai Knives and the Multi-Barreled Shotgun. Basically, instead of having you buy increasingly better versions of your weapons, the new system will give you a choice of perks to experiment with every couple of levels.

I've only poked around the new system for a short while so I can't tell you how deep it truly is. What I can say is that it feels considerably more exciting to unlock a new perk than a simple stat boost, even if the end result might sometimes be the same.

Should the World War Z team release another major update, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, have fun with the new Horde Mode!
