[Update]: After only a few months in Early Access, Torchlight 3 has now been unleashed onto PC and consoles.

Sometimes, releasing a game out of nowhere and with very little advertising can be a good thing. In the case of the freshly launched PC version of Persona 4 Golden, the sudden launch quickly resulted in a massive wave of excitement as both the port and the game itself are rock solid.

Unfortunately, this week was also marked with the exact opposite scenario. The long-awaited ARPG Torchlight 3 has just recently landed onto Steam Early Access with almost no fanfare, and soon enough got absolutely savaged by the user reviews.

From what I can tell, the main complaints seem to be centered around Torchlight 3 simply being a slower, less complex version of Torchlight 2. The visuals are still as lovely as ever, but there currently doesn't seem to be enough actual substance to warrant the €30 price tag. A real shame since the Torchlight series has the potential to compete with the big boys, yet every time it seems like it's getting close, it somehow falls flat on its face and disappears for a few years.

That said, Torchlight 3 has only just launched into Steam Early Access, so with a bit of luck, the developers might still be able to turn this train around and give Torchlight fans exactly what they wanted. Until that happens, however, you're probably better off saving your money and simply keeping an eye on Torchlight 3's progress moving forward.

You can do so, as well as check out what the playerbase is complaining about, over at Steam.
