Age of Empires: Definitive Edition official artwork and logo

The modern remaster of the RTS classic Age of Empires 2 was so successful it ended up spawning entirely new expansions, so it shouldn't come as a massive surprise to hear that Microsoft has announced the Definitive Edition of the original Age of Empires. It will come with fully remastered 4k graphics, a re-orchestrated sound track, major gameplay improvements including the ability to zoom out way further than what was previously possible, and perhaps most importantly, a modern matchmaking system.

You can check out what the new and improved Age of Empires looks like in the relatively recent announcement trailer. It doesn't feature much in terms of straight up gameplay, but its more than enough to give you an idea of just what the developers are trying to achieve. Have a look:

There is unfortunately not much information available right now, but what I can tell you is that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will be coming later this year. If you would like to check it out before launch, and also help the developers sort out any pesky bugs, you can sign up for the beta test by heading over to the official website. And since I can offer you nothing else, allow me to send you off with a couple of images from the Definitive Edition:
