While the Youtube craze has slightly died down, Minecraft still remains as one of the most popular games in the entire world, with pretty much ever kid having their own set of diamond armor stashed away in hidden chest somewhere. Given its rampant popularity, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that there is indeed a Minecraft movie in production.

There is unfortunately very little information available right now, but according to Mojang we will be able to feast our eyes on the Minecraft movie on May 24... 2019. To be perfectly honest, I have no idea why this announcement was even made this early on given that I can guarantee 99% of us will forget about it by next month, but here's the full message anyway:

"Hello future Minecraft movie-goers!

I know you’ve been thinking just about every day, “When’s the Minecraft movie coming out?” Luckily for you, we can finally say!

The Minecraft movie will be released on May 24, 2019! The film will also be released in 3D & IMAX.

Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?

That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!"

As for the movie itself, I actually have high hopes for it. A few years back I would've just shunned it as a soulless cash-in, but after watching The Lego Movie and Wreck-it Ralph I'm now convinced that a movie based around toys and video games can not only be done, but done well! Here's to hoping the Minecraft movie continues along that trend.

If you can't be bothered waiting until 2019 to get your next Minecraft fix, you could give Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode a try. Its currently 50% off on the Steam Summer Sale, and while its nowhere near the quality of Telltale's other work, its still an enjoyable couple of hours, especially if you're playing alongside your kids.
