To say that Star Wars Battlefront 2's launch was mired in controversy would be one hell of an understatement, but thankfully there is light at the end of the tunnel. After a lengthy period of silence, the developers have now released a greatly improved progression system, removed every single pay-to-win element, and even unlocked all heroes and ships for everyone to enjoy!

So instead of getting random Star Cards from loot boxes, you will now earn individual experience for simply playing the class, hero or ship of your choice. That experience can then be used to either unlock or upgrade whichever Star Card you like in your chosen class. A simple little change in the grand scheme of things, but one that will make Star Wars Battlefront 2 infinitely more enjoyable to play as the whole progression is now based on actually playing the game rather than praying the gods of randomness favor you.

No longer will ship duels be heavily influenced by luck!

As for the loot boxes themselves, they are no longer available for purchase. Instead, you can earn them by logging in daily, completing milestones, or just by messing around with timed challenges. In terms of rewards you can expect to receive credits and cosmetic items such as taunts or victory poses, but nothing that impacts the gameplay in any way.

There will be an additional batch of cosmetics coming in with the April update, but thankfully you will not have to gamble in order to unlock these cosmetics either. You will be able to simply buy them with either in-game currency or a lump sum of real-world money. When it comes to microtransactions this is pretty much the ideal system in my eyes, so hats off to however changed the previously random nonsense to something sensible like this!

Today's update has also arrived with a variety of balance changes and bug fixes, though there are a bit too many for me to simply list out. So if you're interested in all of the details, you should head on over to the official website.

The final, and perhaps most important thing to mention, is that you made this happen! If the gaming community at large didn't push back against the objectively terrible progression system, then Star Wars Battlefront 2 would still be a complete mess of a game despite the fact that it's actual gameplay is extremely solid. So if you ever encounter another publisher try to push greedy microtransactions at the expense of the game itself, make sure to speak up because your and everyone else's voice really does matter!
