Official logo for the newly announced Sonic Racing game

If you told me a few years ago that Sega is working on another Sonic themed racing game I would probably laugh until I could laugh no longer. After all, why in the world would you create a racing game based around a character that is not only the fastest being in existence, but also someone that doesn't even use a vehicle!?

However, now that I've finally played and thoroughly enjoyed Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a cart game I am willing to recommend to just about anyone, I am genuinely excited to announce that Sega is working on a brand new Sonic racing game! There aren't that many details available just yet, but it would appear that this new game will have a much more sensible albeit boring title: Sonic Racing.

You can get a little bit of a sneak peek through the recently posted teaser right below, but don't get your hopes up too high as it's literally just the logo and some car noises:

While this is a bit of a stretch, the artwork on the letter "R" closely matches the artwork from the fairly mediocre Sega Saturn racing game Sonic R. Even if this is intentional, I can't imagine it being anything more than a bit of a throwback given that most Sonic R characters raced on foot while the Sonic Racing teaser quite clearly features vehicles.

Speaking of which, I can only hope that the developers won't limit themselves to Sonic characters to fill out the roster. Half of the fun in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was watching Sonic get flung into a pit by a samurai from Total War, only for them to get hit by a salvo of bees by the real-life NASCAR racer Danica Patrick. Yeah... Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was and still is bit of a weird game, but it is the sort of weirdness that should be cherished!

Either way, once more information becomes available I'll make sure to cover it, but until then you might also want to check out the newly announced Sonic Mania Plus. It's basically a mini-expansion that adds two new characters and a brand new Encore game mode that'll reshuffle the levels and offer more replay value. And to end all of this on a bit of a cheeky clickbait, let's just say that you will probably never guess which two Sonic characters are being added!
