Official artwork for Planetside 1

Planetside 1 was one of the first "MMO" games I've ever laid my hands on, and as such it will forever hold a very special place in my heart, but there's no denying that its heyday has long since past. With almost no active players and the last important content update being nearly a decade ago, I don't think anyone should be surprised to hear that Planetside 1 is closing down its doors for good.

According to the recently posted announcement, the Planetside 1 server will be taken down on July 1st, at 4:00 PM PT. Here's what the brief message reads:

"While we hope you are as excited as we are about the recent changes (Planetside 2 stuff), we do have to make a more solemn announcement. On July 1st, at 4:00 PM PT, we will be closing the PlanetSide 1 server. PlanetSide 1 has a very important history with Daybreak Games and a special place in the hearts of those who work on its successor. While we have run the game for free since 2014, due to evolving business needs and technical requirements it has become necessary to conclude this service.

We hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy the remaining time available with each other and please help us give PlanetSide 1 the sendoff it deserves."

If you would like to give Planetside 1 the sendoff it truly deserves, now would be the best time to jump in as I doubt its going to get any more players than this. Maybe on the final day, but I doubt you'll be able to get any actual gameplay going at that point.

The second announcement relates to the EverQuest themed card game, Legends of Norrath. I was never really into Everquest, so I have to admit that this is the first time I've even heard of Legends of Norrath, but it still doesn't feel good to watch a game fade away, even though its development has been ceased for a while now. As per the official blog post, you'll be able to play Legends of Norrath until August 17, Noon PT. As before, here's what the "brief" message reads:

"Legends of Norrath has not had an active development team for quite some time and in the best interest of our company and players, we have made the difficult decision to close the servers on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Noon Pacific Time.

Purchasing Legends of Norrath booster packs and the monthly All Access Membership claim of Legends of Norrath booster packs will no longer be available after Monday, July 18, 2016 at 10AM Pacific Time.

All loot rewards and packs in the Legends of Norrath client will need to be open and claimed on your character prior to when the servers close to ensure that your loot rewards are available in EverQuest and EverQuest II.

We know some of you are extremely enthusiastic about some of the items that were previously introduced in the Legends of Norrath TCG packs. These loot rewards will continue to be available to players through other means. Look to the Marketplace for packs which give an opportunity for rewards from previous LON sets.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support."

Most of that announcement sounds like straight up gibberish to me, but from what I can gather you still have a chance to get some exclusive goodies for EverQuest 1 and 2 by "pillaging" the marketplace. Just don't forget to open and claim your loot before the servers shut down, or else you might just end up losing all of it.
