Path of Exile's previous Bestiary league was a bit of a mixed bag. While the concept itself was quite entertaining, the actual implementation left a lot to be desired, especially in the late-game where only certain beasts were of any real relevance. With that in mind, I am delighted to say that the newly released Incursion update is one of those most enjoyable ones Path of Exile has ever had!
First and foremost, many of the previously terrible skills have been either reworked or heavily rebalanced, so if you're itching to give oldschool classics like Fireball or Ice Blast another try, this new league has you covered. On a similar note, burn damage has been buffed so Ignite is now once again a powerful status effect, while the various Trap interactions have been made more consistent and interesting to fiddle with. There are a lot more changes, many of which are too specific to cover, so if you're interested in all of the details you should head on over to the official forums.
What I really wanted to highlight was the newly introduced Incursion mechanic. In every single zone you visit you will find a brand new character by the name of Alva, which will give you a chance to travel into the past and essentially create your very own dungeon which you will be able to plunder later on. There are a seemingly a ton of different rooms and upgrades to consider, so choosing which pathways to unlock, improve or forsake is actually quite a difficult decision.
After all, you can have a room filled to the brim with the best loot humanity has ever seen, but if you haven't created a doorway leading to that room then it's all pretty much wasted. Since you only have 30-40 seconds in the past at best, including the time you will need to spend fighting the boss itself, the whole event is a delightful mixture of panic and exhilaration. It's one of my favorites league events Path of Exile has ever brought in, rivaling even the Abyss league in terms of pure enjoyment, so I'd definitely recommend you give it a try for yourself as well.
