[Update]: The melee-focused Legion update has now arrived!

While most spells in Path of Exile are really fun to mess around with, the melee combat often leaves a lot to be desired. This goes doubly so in the early game when you don't have access to some of the most important support gems, meaning you'll spend most your time swinging around a slow and unwieldy weapon, which is about as fun as it sounds.

With that in mind, you might be glad to hear that these problems will soon be a thing of the past! Once the massive Legion update arrives in three days, melee combat will be receiving a bit of rework, melee abilities will be getting some much-needed improvements, while some of the most powerful spells and items from the previous league will finally get smacked with the nerf-bat.

First and foremost, most weapons will now be significantly faster, while most weapon skills are being made to either further increase that speed or to greatly reduce it. A simple enough change, but this should help differentiate builds that focus on thousands of weak slices and those that focus on one gigantic slam, as well as open up even further options when it comes to support gems.

On a similar note, the vast majority of melee attack skills will now affect multiple enemies at the same time, and yes, this does include skills like Flicker Strike! Combine this with the newly added ability to cancel your animations in order to help with mobility, and you've got yourself a melee combat system that should not only feel a lot better, but require a lot less resources to fully come online!

Everything I've mentioned so far is only the tip of the glacier, however, so if you're interested in all of the details you should head on over to the official forums. It'll take you a while to get through all of it, but there really is some exciting stuff in there!
