Diablo immortal concept artwork showing demons and the playable characters

A fair bit of time has gone by since its disastrous first showing, but Blizzard's free-to-play "MMO-ARPG" Diablo Immortal has now finally landed into Open Beta for both PC and mobile platforms. While the gameplay is pretty much the same between the two versions, the PC one sports a revamped UI, chat functionality, as well as controller support.

What it looks like in action, as well as how the whole thing differs from Diablo 3 itself, that you can get a bit of an idea of through the freshly posted gameplay trailer. Have a gander:

While the concept of a simpler yet highly portable Diablo game is an excellent one, the monetization is where everything sadly starts to fall apart. Instead of letting you power up your character by doing increasingly harder content and min-maxing your items, Diablo Immortal stonewalls your progress and forces you to choose between insane levels of grinding or ponying up equally insane amounts of money.

So while Diablo Immortal is entirely free to try out, I would honestly recommend against doing so. I say this because the very worst thing that can happen to you is that you find yourself enjoying the gameplay, as sooner or later you'll fall into the all too familiar mobile game trap where you need to throw away ever-increasing amounts of money in order to continue having fun.

Instead, if you're bored and looking for something genuinely good to play, you might be interested to hear that Wolfenstein: The New Order is free to grab until June 9th. The gunplay is great, the story is engaging, and the whole game is fairly short so it never overstays its welcome. Best of all, no cash shop!
