Call of Cthulhu RPG has been announced

Despite being an enormous fan of Lovecraft's work I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't even know there was a pen&paper Call of Cthulhu RPG in existence, let alone that it was this popular or well renowned.

Luckily, it seems that Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive have banded together to make a faithful video game adaptation of the apparently legendary Call of Cthulhu RPG. Here's the brief message Cyanide sent out with the announcement:

"We are happy that Focus entrusted us with the development of a videogame adaptation of the legendary RPG Call of Cthulhu. As long-time fans of the license, working with longtime partner publisher Focus Home Interactive on such an original and exciting project is, once again, a privilege. We hope to offer fans the game they've long been waiting for."

The Call of Cthulhu game, much like the pen&paper version its inspired by, is an RPG/Investigation hybrid with psychological horror and stealth mechanics mixed in, all set in a deeply immersive and terrifying world.

The player's mission will be to discover the truth behind the death of a famous artist and her family on a backwater island which will inevitably lead to more disturbing revelations as the Cult of Cthulhu gets involved. In your pursuit for information you will have to avoid both physical and mental harm as the mere glimmer of understanding what the Great Old Ones are can turn an intellectual in to a blithering madman.

The pen&paper RPG was obviously a multiplayer game but neither Cyanide nor Focus Home have said anything about that aspect of the RPG transitioning in to the official video game adaptation. I'm not saying that multiplayer is not going to happen but rather that you should be prepared for such an occurrence.

Call of Cthulhu is being built in Unreal Engine 4 and is set to arrive for the PC and consoles in 2017, though no official date was given.
