[Update]: According to new rumors, Blizzard is currently working on Diablo 4 and a story-focused Overwatch game!

Even though the Overwatch team was expanded with new writers and developers, the pace and quantity of updates hasn't really increased when compared to the previous two years. As you might imagine, this quickly led to rumors that Blizzard is working on some sort of massive Overwatch project behind the scenes, perhaps even the much-requested and story-focused expansion.

While none of this has been officially confirmed or even commented on, things have definitely become more interesting after the recent Activision Blizzard earnings call. According to Blizzard's J. Allen Back, the team has some rather massive plans for Overwatch's future, plans that seem to expand beyond the current game itself.

"Over the rest of the year, we'll continue to add new heroes and new maps and new experiences," reads the statement. "And last quarter, I talked about how we have very large ambitions for the Overwatch universe and how it can develop over time. And for us, it's going to be a balance of working on the existing game as well as the team focusing on other work that they have."

"Overwatch is a huge tentpole franchise for Blizzard, and we're continuing to dedicate the resources and the attention so that it can to continue to grow -- we can continue to grow the community and the franchise over time."

What exactly all of this means, I'm afraid I can only speculate. It could be something as massive as a story-focused expansion, or it could be something as 'simple' as a map editor to ensure that Overwatch remains relevant for years to come. Whatever it is, it has certainly been taking a lot of Blizzard's attention recently given how the influx of new events and lore has slowed down to a crawl.

Once more information becomes available, most likely during this year's Blizzcon, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, I'd highly recommend you download the PTR and check out the new Workshop scripting tool. It might still be in beta, but it's already pretty fun to mess around with new game modes!
