[Update #2]: Assassin's Creed Valhalla will be launching a week earlier than expected, on November 10th!

[Update]: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gameplay preview shows off the combat, exploration and insult-battles

After a couple of relatively generic games, it seems that Assassin’s Creed has now finally found its place among the more mythical elements of history. It all started with Origins, continued with the rather excellent Odyssey, and is now looking to culminate with the newly announced Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. And honestly? I'm a big fan of this new direction for the series!

While the details are still few and far between, Valhalla will take place in the 9th century and will follow a clan of Vikings that is fleeing from the famine in Norway in order to establish a new life on the shores of England. As you might remember from history, that doesn't exactly go over well with the English, so expect to see plenty of combat throughout Valhalla.

The player character Eivor, who can be both male or female, will be able to use a wide variety of weapons, including dual-wielding just about any combination you can find. And yes, if you're so inclined, this does mean you'll be able to run around and whack people over the head with two shields! How exactly his assassin skills will tie into all of this, that still remains to be seen.

Once you're done with all of the fighting, you'll also have to take good care of your settlement as it will be your permanent base throughout Valhalla. You'll need to choose which buildings to construct and upgrade, recruit new members and ensure their loyalty, and eventually, launch massive raids against English fortresses in order to solidify your claim on the land.

You can get a bit of an idea of what this might entail through two of the most recent trailers. There's basically no gameplay between the two of them, but hopefully you'll still find them quite informative. Have a gander:

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be releasing for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at some point this holiday season. You can learn a little bit more about it, as well as keep an eye on any further updates, over at the official website.
