[Update]: The System Shock Remake has now arrived, and it's looking quite good so far!

It took far longer than anyone, even the developers themselves, could've expected, but System Shock's long and eventful journey is now finally coming to an end. As long as everything goes according to plan, the much-anticipated System Shock Remake will be unleashed onto PC next week, on May 30th! The console versions are also on the way, though those ones don't have a concrete release date just yet.

While the new System Shock will follow the same sort of gameplay formula as the original, you can expect to see quite a few differences between the two games as this is a remake rather than a remaster. Most notably, the System Shock Remake will come with completely new HD visuals, revamped controls, a modern interface, a new hacking system, a bunch of new enemies and locations to mess around with, and naturally, plenty of quality-of-life improvements and fixes to make everything a bit smoother.

What some of these improvements look like in action, that you can check out through the freshly posted gameplay trailer below. Have a gander, it's a fairly informative one:

If you're still not sure what to think about the remake and its additions, you'll be happy to hear that there is a free demo available! I'm not exactly sure how old the demo is and how well it represents the final game, but either way it should give you a pretty good idea of just what the System Shock Remake is trying to do and whether it's even your cup of tea.

While I'm usually vehemently against pre-ordering anything, the System Shock Remake does offer a pretty nifty incentive - a free copy of the upcoming System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. So if you're a fan of the series and the above-mentioned demo managed to live up to your expectations, the pre-order might be worth the risk.

Whatever your plans may be, you can learn more about System Shock and its remake over at the official website. Enjoy, and I'll make sure to let you know once the remake actually arrives onto PC.
