[Update]: Knights of Light has now landed onto Steam Early Access, and is expected to stay there for around two years.

In a rather refreshing diversion from the usual action-RPG settings, the upcoming Knights of Light takes place in 7th-century Iran. The story follows two brothers tasked with commanding armies that are to have an instrumental role during the historical battle of Al-Qadiseiya, an event that quickly led to the collapse of the Sassanian empire. So depending on how faithful Knights of Light remains towards history, this could be an opportunity to learn a little bit more about events that aren't often mentioned in the West.

When it comes to the actual gameplay, Knights of Light will be divided into two parts: solo combat and army management. During solo mode you'll be able to roam across the world and use a variety of abilities to annihilate your enemies, as you would in any action-RPG. On the other hand, while in army management mode you'll be able to give orders to your armies, conquer new territory, manage resources, and naturally, fortify any crucial regions.

You can get a bit of an idea of what this looks like, as well as what Knights of Light's setting has to offer, through the recently posted trailer. Have a peek:

Knights of Light will be heading into Steam Early Access this February 29th, and it's expected to stay there for about two years. So while the core mechanics will be present and accounted for, there is likely to be a noticeable lack of content and polish throughout the early versions.

In other words, if you do decide to grab Knights of Light, do it in order to help the developers out rather than because you want to simply play the game. Doing the latter just seems like a quick-fire way to get burnt out while there is still limited content on offer.

Whatever your choice may be, you can learn more about Knights of Light over at Steam.
