Dwarf Fortress impressive colony sim artwork and logo

[Update]: Dwarf Fortress' new and improved version has now landed onto Steam, and I'm happy to say that it has done so alongside overwhelmingly positive reviews!.

Despite Dwarf Fortress being a one-of-a-kind colony simulator that can churn out a seemingly never-ending stream of fascinating stories, recommending it is surprisingly difficult since the process of actually playing the game is both obtuse and overwhelming. It takes quite a few hours of reading guides and wiki articles before you can even begin to make sense of everything, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

So in order to make things more understandable for beginners, as well as easier to manage for even veterans, the Dwarf Fortress team is currently hard at work on a greatly enhanced Steam version. Once it arrives it'll bring with it stylish visuals to better represent what's going on, an overhauled UI with a focus on usability and readability, Steam Workshop support to make modding easier, as well as a whole bunch of random quality-of-life improvements and additions to help smooth out any rough edges.

If that sounds like a dream come true, I'm happy to say I bring even more good news. Kitfox Games have just revealed that Dwarf Fortress will be launching onto Steam "sooner than you might think!"

"Soon" in this case might be a matter of days rather than weeks as the response above was to someone asking if Dwarf Fortress will be launching before September 10th. So while no details have been given just yet, you might want to keep your eyes peeled as a proper announcement is almost certainly on the way.

Once it arrives and we get a proper release date, or Dwarf Fortress suddenly just goes live on Steam, I'll make sure to let you know. Until then, you can read a few more tidbits about Dwarf Fortress and its enhanced version over at (you guessed it) Steam. Enjoy!
