If you're up for a deep dive into gaming history, you might want to check out GOG's latest announcement. From this day forward, two classic strategy-focused RPGs The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge are entirely free to grab.

Despite being written for extremely limited hardware, both games are surprisingly deep and expansive. In a way, you can even consider them a distant predecessor to the Heroes of Might and Magic series. So expect to see a whole bunch of challenging turn-based combat, exploration, resource management, and even storytelling.

However, since these are games from 1984 and 1985 respectively, there simply wasn't enough room in the ZX Spectrum cassettes to fit all of the stories and dialogue. As such, if you do decide to give either game a try, make sure to read the accompanying novella in order to get a better feel for the world, as well as a clearer idea of just what you're trying to achieve.

You can learn more about the two classics, as well as give them a try for yourself, over at GOG. Have fun, and I'll leave you with a trailer for The Lords of Midnight:
