Ubisoft has announced that there will be no new AC games in 2016

Assassin's Creed fans have been complaining about oversaturation for years now but it seems that with Unity's extremely poor reception Ubisoft has finally got the message.

In a blog post that went up today the Assassin's Creed team thanked their fans for sticking by them for all these years and announced that there will be no new Assassin's Creed game this year as they want to create a truly memorable experience with the next one. Here's the most interesting part of the announcement:

"This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback.

We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.

We’ll have more to share on all of the above soon. In the meantime, we want to say thank you to our millions of fans around the world for your continued support."

To me this is the best piece of news I could've heard in regards to Assassin's Creed. It is a great series that has unfortunately wallowed in the mud for far too long because the yearly development schedule simply doesn't allow for much creativity so every new AC game ended up being exactly like the previous one but with more useless weapons and tools. Even Black Flag, my personal favorite among the series, suffered heavily from this issue as every moment outside of the ship felt like I was playing Assassin's Creed 3 again.

I don't know what or who sparked these changes within Ubisoft but given how quickly they've addressed all of the beta issues in The Division and how willing they seem to be in making the Assassin's Creed series unique and special again I will be very glad if they end up sticking around.

As a final note, the Assassin's Creed movie staring Michael Fassbender as the lead Assassin will be releasing in theaters on December 21st, 2016. With it not being an Assassin's Creed game it means that Ubisoft is still technically not cheating when it comes to their "no AC in 2016" policy! All joking aside I do hope it and the Warcraft movie end up being good because the era of shitty video game movies has lasted far too long.
