Roadhog from Overwatch destroying Torbjorn

While the balance might not be perfect just yet, Overwatch is one of the most finely tuned new releases I've had the pleasure to play in quite a while. As such, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that ESL has announced the first big Overwatch tournament.

The showdown between the top eight teams from across the US and Europe will take place during this year's Gamescom, from August 20-21. Even though Overwatch is still in its infancy this isn't the first serious tournament the game has witnessed, but it is the first one with a $100,000 prize pool for the teams to compete for.

If you feel like you and your buddies have a chance at competing with the very best, the open qualifiers will begin on June 27 and run all the way through July. These qualifiers will be hosted on ESL Play, and with only a couple of days left to register I would recommend you get on it as soon as possible.

The open qualifiers will then be followed by regional qualifiers, and a final online qualifier. Specific details and dates are currently lacking, though ESL has stated that they will release further information once the tournament starts getting underway.

For those of you that aren't looking to compete, but would instead prefer to simply watch other people blow each other up, may I suggest checking out the GosuGamers Youtube channel. They have done an excellent job of hosting multiple tournaments with some of the best players around, so if you're looking for competitive gameplay, this would be a good place to start. Enjoy!
