Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers artwork official

You might not expect this from a 'simple' card game, but Magic: The Gathering has quite an extensive and intriguing lore behind it. Combine that with its insane popularity and presence in nearly every hobby store, and it was only a matter of time before someone decided to create a proper RPG set in the Magic: The Gathering universe.

The upcoming and currently unnamed AAA Magic: The Gathering RPG will be headed by Cryptic Studios, developers you might know from their work on the Neverwinter MMO. There is unfortunately no information about what this RPG is going to play or look like, but according to the quotes that came with the press release it seems to be shaping up as a high-budget action RPG.

Whether its going to be any good or not, however, that is an interesting question to ponder. Neverwinter is by no means a terrible game, and I enjoyed it for the couple of hours I played, but it definitely lacks in both the storytelling and combat departments. As such, I must admit I'm a little worried this Magic: The Gathering RPG will not do the setting justice, and will mostly end up as 'yet another RPG'. But whatever the case may be we'll have to wait for quite a while to find out as right now the game is still in the earliest stages of development - there isn't even a bit of concept art available!
