The Surge is an upcoming sci-fi action RPG set in a dystopian, near-future version of Earth. It is being made by Deck 13, a studio you might recognize from their work on Lords of the Fallen, and much like their previous game The Surge is going to be heavily focused around tactical melee combat. In other words, expect to do a whole lot of dodging around, waiting for the enemies to expose their weakness, and then smashing their robo-brains out with a variety of sci-fi weaponry.

Since trying to explain all of this in brief is a bit difficult, you'll find the most recent preview video right below. It goes over both the general story and the combat mechanics, so if you're looking to learn more about The Surge this one's well worth watching. Have a look:

While the story premise itself seems interesting, the stuff they've shown throughout this gameplay video just isn't very inspiring, and that's putting it gently. On the positive side, the actual reason you would want to play The Surge - the combat - seems to be pretty damn awesome! There are some clunky animations here and there, but for the most part it seems to be a variant of the Dark Souls combat system where the light and heavy attacks have been replaced with horizontal and vertical ones instead. The Dark Souls series represents some of my favorite games ever, so I certainly won't complain about more games in the genre, especially if they have as much potential as The Surge!

The Surge will be coming to PC and consoles on May 16th, though take that date with a grain of salt given that I've only seen it mentioned on Steam so far. Speaking of which, if you would like to learn more about The Surge I would recommend heading over to either Steam or the official website. And finally, here's a couple of images showcasing the player character and some of the enemies:
